Thomas Buess
Entrepreneurship Law Instructor
Thomas Buess is a practicing lawyer focused on corporation and business law, commercial litigation, and real estate law. He earned law degrees from both Harvard Law School (JD, or a basic law degree) and George Washington Law School (LL.M., or master of laws). Between 1970 and 1974, he served in the US military as a captain in the Judge Advocate General’s Corp (JAGC). He worked his way to become the Judge Advocate General, the Army’s top legal officer, earning the Army Commendation Medal for his service with the Pentagon.
As a civilian lawyer, Thomas has represented a myriad of clients in a number of capacities. He has review lease contracts, advised in trade matters, ensured corporate compliance, and assisted in the purchase of assets and businesses. In the court room, he has directed and tried a number of corporate cases, including contractual and labor disputes, personal injury cases, and alienation of affectation cases. He has negotiated commercial leases for factories, office buildings, and warehouses, and resolved disputes between landlords and tenants.
He provides a lot of ancillary legal services, as well, working as a Legal Writing Instructor at Illinois Institute of Technology’s Chicago-Kent College of Law, giving presentations to federal workers about property law, and serving as an attorney for Off-Loop Theater company. He was the director of Project SKIL, an organization which encourages disadvantaged youth to develop skills necessary to find and keep jobs. In his free time, he is also a deacon for Northminister Presbyterian Church in nearby Evanston.
