Carlos Jaramillo
Program Consultant and Instructor
Born and raised in Chicago, Carlos is a lifelong educator who started off his professional career by teaching History and coaching soccer in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood at Our Lady of Tepeyac High School. After teaching for two years he transitioned to the UNO Charter School Network, where he worked for the next eight years. At UNO, Jaramillo served as the Deputy Chief of Staff overseeing multiple departments for all 16 of its schools, including: Graduate Support, Parent Outreach, and Athletics.
Having been born into a deep rooted Mexican family, In 2007 he created the increasingly popular “Race of the Dead/Carrera de los Muertos” a 5k race held in the Pilsen neighborhood and named after the Mexican holiday, “Dia de Los Muertos,” a colorful celebration honoring those who have passed away. Jaramillo orchestrated the event that features Mexican folkloric music, authentic cuisine, and traditional costumes. It has become one of the City’s biggest and most unique 5k races.
Jaramillo has enjoyed a dynamic career where education, heritage, family values and sports are important. “I grew up in a household where family, education, and sports were all important. I remember my dad giving me two options when I was growing up. He said, ‘Either you go to college, or you go to college.’ There was no other choice. He wanted me to get a degree. It was always school during the day and soccer at night and on the weekends. "
These days, Carlos continues to work within the field of education. He currently serves as the Seagull Institute’s Program Director, overseeing programming and logistics for the Institute. “As a lifelong Chicagoan, I’ve always felt the necessity to properly showcase and boast my city to 1st time visitors. This role grants me that opportunity to give guests a lasting positive impression of Chicago.”
Through his efforts, Carlos has been recognized for his work within the community. In 2010, Major League Soccer awarded him the “Community MVP Award for his community efforts working with the Chicago Fire. In 2013 he was selected by Ketel One Vodka as one of Chicago’s Modern Hispanic Gentlemen. Carlos resides in the Garfield Ridge neighborhood of Chicago and is an avid Chicago sports fan. On a global scale, he thoroughly follows FC Barcelona.
